Below is a description of our planned emphasis for 2007 - 2008. Please email (to info@thegao.org) or mail (to 150 East Ponce de Leon Avenue, Suite 430, Decatur, GA 30030) your comments, suggestions, or questions. We welcome your comments on our work throughout the year.
The first priority of the PAIMI Program is to protect all individuals (adults and children) with mental illness from abuse and neglect.
• Objective 1: Investigate at least fifteen (15) deaths in institutional and community settings for abuse and neglect.
• Objective 2: Investigate at least ten (10) incidents of extensive abuse and neglect of persons with mental illness..
• Objective 3: Investigate at least ten (10) incidents of extensive abuse and neglect, on behalf of children in institutional and community settings.
• Objective 4: Advocate on behalf of thirty (30) individuals to address abuse and neglect (i.e., use of restraints and seclusion, inappropriate treatment plans and medication issues).
• Objective 5: Target systemic change of practices and policies on forced medication issues.
• Objective 6: Provide individual rights education and self-advocacy trainings for at least two hundred (200) people.
The second PAIMI Program priority is to advocate for the placement in the most integrated setting for people with mental illness, through the implementation of the "Olmstead" decision.
• Objective 1: Advocate for appropriate discharge to the most integrated setting for at least eighty (80) people with mental illness who have been institutionalized, with a focus on people who have been institutionalized for longer than 60 days.
• Objective 2: Deflect institutional placement for at least ten (10) children.
• Objective 3: Advocate for at least ten (10) children in institutional settings for community placement.
• Objective 4: Advocate for mental health parity and the implementation of Olmstead.
The third PAIMI Program priority is to advocate for appropriate community supports and services for people with mental illness.
• Objective 1: Develop self-advocacy workshops.
